Jayu — Free to Roam자유(自遊)
「자유(自遊)」는 낡은 조각배 하나에 와르르 올라탄 아이들의 한바탕 소동을 담은 군상 작품입니다. 맨 위에 선 아이는 막대 끝에 하늘빛 천을 매달아 깃발처럼 높이 치켜들었고, 그 아래 아이들은 서로 엉키고 기대며 저마다 소리치고 웃고 있습니다.
누군가는 입을 크게 벌려 환호하고, 누군가는 바람에 머리칼을 날리며 앞을 바라봅니다. 넘어지고 겹쳐진 몸짓들이 한데 모여 마치 거친 바다를 헤쳐 가는 한 척의 배처럼 보입니다.
제목의 '자유(自遊)'는 스스로 '자(自)'에 놀 '유(遊)'를 씁니다. 누가 시키지 않아도 스스로 놀고, 어른들의 지도에는 없는 길을 마음껏 상상하던 어린 날의 자유입니다. 흙바닥 위의 조각배는 아이들의 눈에 끝없는 바다가 되고, 막대 끝 천 조각은 세상 어디든 데려다줄 돛이 됩니다.
작품은 2022년 개인전 도록의 표지를 장식한 작품이기도 합니다. "자유로운 마음으로 세상을 훨훨 날아다니다"라는 작가의 말처럼, 보는 이의 마음도 함께 그 배에 올라타게 됩니다.
Jayu — Free to Roam is a group sculpture capturing the uproar of children who have tumbled into an old little boat. The child standing on top has tied a sky-blue cloth to the end of a stick and holds it high like a flag, while the children below, tangled together and leaning on one another, are all shouting and laughing.
One cheers with a wide-open mouth; another looks ahead with hair blowing in the wind. Falling, overlapping bodies gather into one, looking like a single boat forging through rough seas.
The title's 'Jayu (自遊)' is written with the characters for 'oneself' and 'play' — the freedom of childhood, when we played on our own without being told to and freely imagined paths that appeared on no grown-up's map. To the children, the little boat on bare earth becomes an endless ocean, and the scrap of cloth on a stick becomes a sail that can take them anywhere in the world.
This work also graced the cover of the catalogue for the artist's 2022 solo exhibition. As the artist puts it, "With a free heart, flying lightly across the world" — and the viewer's heart climbs aboard that boat too.

'자유(自遊)'는 스스로 노는 것을 뜻합니다. 누가 시키지 않아도 마음껏 상상하던 어린 날의 놀이를 담았습니다.

어릴 적 우리에게는 대단한 장난감이 필요하지 않았습니다. 낡은 대야 하나, 나뭇가지 하나, 천 조각 하나만 있으면 금세 바다가 열리고 배가 떠올랐지요.
작품 속 아이들은 누가 먼저랄 것도 없이 배에 올라타 소리치고 웃습니다. 넘어져도, 서로 겹쳐도 아무렇지 않습니다. 함께라서 무섭지 않았고, 함께라서 어디든 갈 수 있었습니다.
'자유(自遊)'라는 제목에는 스스로 놀 줄 알았던 그 시절의 마음을 담았습니다. 어른이 된 지금은 각자의 무거운 신발 끈을 묶고 살지만, 가끔은 마음속 조각배에 그 시절 친구들을 태워 보시기 바랍니다.
With a free heart, flying lightly across the world.
As children we didn't need fancy toys. With an old washbasin, a branch and a scrap of cloth, an ocean opened up in no time and a boat set sail.
The children in this work clamber aboard, no one first or last, shouting and laughing. Falling over or piling on top of one another doesn't matter. Together they weren't afraid; together they could go anywhere.
The title 'Jayu (自遊)' holds the heart of those days, when we knew how to play on our own. Now that we're grown, we each tie the laces of heavy shoes, but now and then I hope you will invite your old friends aboard the little boat in your heart.
