Faces Gathered Year by Year한 해 한 해 쌓인 얼굴들
Faces Gathered Year by Year is a series of six faces, made one at a time from 2023 to 2026 and gathered on a single wall. White faces shaped from dakjongi rise in relief from dark grey canvases.
Each of the four children in the bottom row has a small visitor: one smiles slyly at a ladybird on the tip of his nose, one goes cross-eyed as a butterfly lands, one gapes in surprise at a red dragonfly, and one scrunches up her face at a bee on her head. The faces are all the same white, yet each expression changes with its visitor.
In the top row, two people with curly white hair and stylish sunglasses look down at the children. Leopard-print and red-rimmed sunglasses and red lips show the ease and flair of those who have come through the years.
Like the seasons in which small insects visit one after another from spring to autumn, the children below will pass through year after year and one day become the stylish elders above. The work says that laughter, yawns and frowns were all precious faces of ours.

Ladybird, butterfly, dragonfly, bee. The insects on the children's noses and heads follow one another like the seasons from spring to autumn.
Smiling slyly, going cross-eyed, gaping, frowning. Compare how expressions change, all shaped from the same white dakjongi.
Curly white hair, sunglasses, red lips. The two in the top row show the ease and flair of people who have lived through the years.
The children below and the stylish pair above are one story, linked by time that builds up year by year.

A lively song of marimba and muted trumpet about the little seasons landing on the children's noses and the faces they make.
Since 2023 I have shaped one or two faces each year. They were born separately, but gathered on one wall, they looked like a single family album.
On each child's face I placed one small insect. A nose tickled into laughter, a mouth falling open in surprise, a frown of annoyance — I thought those split-second expressions were the most honest faces children have.
Above them I placed two people with white hair and stylish sunglasses. It was my wish that growing old might not be wilting, but blossoming wonderfully like those curls.
I hope you will think of the years that have gathered on your own face as you stand before this work. Laughter and frowns alike — they were all your spring.
