Astroberia II shows a boy sitting on a rock, rubbing his eyes with one hand, and a bluebird settled lightly on his toes. With curly hair, he looks up at the sky with a face that seems to be laughing after crying, or just waking from sleep.
His other hand rests quietly on his chest. Whether soothing a startled heart or feeling it pounding, the gesture conveys the change a small encounter has brought to his heart.
Like its pair, Astroberia I, this work is shaped from a single earthy hanji colour, and only the bluebird is blue. That the bird lands not on the boy's hand but on his toes — the lowest place of all — makes it resonate all the more.
Comfort sometimes arrives at the lowest place and greets us first. The work speaks of a new encounter that came to a child wiping his wet eyes, and of a new morning that begins where the crying ends.
A boy rubs his eyes on a rock while a bluebird settles softly on his toes.
Do you remember comfort that came to you at your lowest?
In his face — half laughing after tears, half just awake — and his gesture, feel the moment a heart loosens.
As if soothing a startled heart, his hand shows the fluttering change a small encounter brings.
The bird lands not on his hand but on his toes. Comfort sometimes comes first to the lowest place.
Seen with Astroberia I, the girl with a bird on her palm, the story of a bird linking two children is complete.
Recall comfort that arrived unannounced on a hard day, and a presence that stayed with you without a word.
A warm lo-fi folk ballad about a boy comforted by the bluebird that lands on his toes.
I made Astroberia II imagining where the bluebird released by the girl in the first work might have gone.
The bird went to a boy sitting alone on a rock. Wiping his eyes, the child sees the little piece of sky landing on his toes and bursts out laughing. Comfort always seems to come like this — unannounced, to the lowest place.
A presence that simply stays instead of saying 'it's all right'. With that one small encounter, an earth-coloured day takes on colour again.
Placed side by side, the two works show an encounter that began on one child's open palm reaching the toes of another. In front of this work, I hope you will imagine passing on the comfort you have received to someone else.
A pair of works linked by a single bluebird, carrying the flower's meaning: 'a new encounter'.
