Astroberia I아스트로베리아 I
Astroberia I shows a girl smiling at the small bluebird that has landed on her palm. With her hair in two braids and bare feet, she takes a small step forward and carefully holds out her open hand so as not to startle the bird.
Everything — hair, dress and skin — is shaped from a single earthy hanji colour. Only the bluebird is a vivid blue, so the viewer's eye naturally gathers on the girl's palm.
Her hand, held open rather than closed tight, carries not a wish to catch the bird but a gentleness that says it may stay or go. The crumpled hem of her dress and her braids blowing in the wind bring that thrilling moment to life.
The flower language of 'astroberia' is 'a new encounter'. The work quietly shows how an encounter arriving like a piece of sky on an ordinary day can colour someone's whole world.

What new encounter has coloured your day?
The whole figure is shaped in one earthy hanji colour, with only the bluebird in blue, drawing the eye to the moment of encounter.
A hand held open rather than gripping the bird shows a gentle way of meeting — free to stay, free to go.
In the bare foot stepping lightly forward, feel both the thrill of wanting to approach the bird and the care not to frighten it.
Seen with Astroberia II, the boy with a bluebird on his toes, the story of a bird linking two children is complete.
Recall a first meeting that turned an ordinary day into something special, and the first time you held out your hand.
A bright folk song of clarinet and harp about a piece of sky landing on your palm — the thrill of a new encounter.
The flower language of astroberia is 'a new encounter'. When I first heard it, I thought of the small, miraculous encounters that arrive out of nowhere on uneventful days.
So this work began by taking colour away. I shaped the child from head to toe in a single earthy hanji, and gave the colour of the sky only to the bluebird on her palm. Because an encounter comes like that — the one colour in a monotone world.
The girl doesn't grip the bird. She simply smiles with her hand held open. I thought not holding on was the very way to make an encounter last.
I hope you will remember the encounter that coloured your day as you stand before this work — and that its blue will pass on to someone else.
