It's a Wonderful Life IIt's a Wonderful Life I
「It's a Wonderful Life I」은 화려한 무대가 아닌 일상의 한 자리에서 자신의 인생을 찬미하는 한 사람의 순간을 담은 작품입니다.
It's a Wonderful Life I captures the moment a person celebrates his own life — not on a glamorous stage, but in an everyday spot. An old man with a grey moustache dances with both arms thrown up and his eyes closed.
A shirt with rolled-up sleeves, a pink scarf at his neck, trousers cinched with a belt, and well-worn shoes. His clothes could not be more ordinary, yet his fingertips reaching for the sky and his slightly bent knees carry an ease and a joy that only someone who has weathered many years can have.
The folds of his clothing, shaped in dakjongi, look like the grain of the years he has lived. Even the crumpled and creased days become part of the dance in this moment, adding rhythm to every movement.
It does not matter that there is no audience to applaud, or no spotlight. The work tells us: the very place where I stand is my stage.
An old man with a grey moustache dances with his arms raised, celebrating life right where he stands.
What kind of stage is the place where you stand right now?
파라솔 아래 누운 할머니를 담은 「It's a Wonderful Life II」와 함께 보면, 인생을 찬미하는 두 사람의 이야기가 완성됩니다.
His raised arms and closed eyes show a moment of release — enjoying life without caring who is watching.
Rolled-up sleeves, a pink scarf, old shoes. Because he is so ordinary, many people can see their own story in him.
The folds of shirt and trousers in dakjongi are the grain of the years he has lived, and the lines that create the rhythm of his dance.
Seen together with It's a Wonderful Life II, the grandmother resting under a parasol, the story of two people celebrating life is complete.
Recall a song you hummed where no one could see, and a little dance of your own.
A retro swing song about dancing to an old tune on the radio, turning the place where you stand into a stage.
It's a wonderful life
I made this work imagining a poetic moment of celebrating one's own life right where one stands, even if it is not on a glamorous stage.
Around us are so many grown-ups who have quietly lived through their days without applause — people who worked for their families, raised their children, and always put their own pleasures last.
I thought that if such a person one day suddenly raised both arms and danced to an old song on the radio, that moment would shine brighter than any stage in the world.
I wanted each fold of dakjongi to hold the years he has passed through, and his fingertips reaching for the sky to hold a heart that says yes to all of that time.
I hope you will straighten your shoulders for a moment in front of this work. The place where you stand right now is your stage.
A pair of works about two people who celebrate life right where they are, with no glamorous stage required.
