「별자리 — Virgo」는 별자리 연작 가운데 처녀자리를 담은 작품입니다. 붉은빛과 푸른빛 성운이 은은하게 번지는 밤하늘 아래, 빨간 체크 셔츠에 청바지를 걷어 올린 소년이 액자 창틀에 걸터앉아 기타를 치고 있습니다. 한쪽 다리는 액자 밖으로 늘어뜨린 채, 고개를 젖히고 눈을 감은 얼굴에는 노래에 흠뻑 빠진 미소가 번져 있습니다.

Constellation — Virgo is the Virgo piece in the constellation series. Beneath a night sky softly washed with red and blue nebulae, a boy in a red check shirt and rolled-up jeans sits on the sill of the frame, playing the guitar. One leg dangles outside the frame; his head is tipped back, eyes closed, and his face glows with a smile lost in song.
Sitting astride the inside and outside of the frame, the boy looks like a small singer connecting the night sky and us. Believing that someone up in the sky is listening even on a night when no one else is, he sings with the softest voice for the longest time.
When the light hidden in the frame comes on, stars light up one by one in the sky the boy is gazing at, and the shape of Virgo appears — like the moment the stars answer the song he sang to them.
Virgo is depicted holding an ear of wheat, and stands for care, delicacy, and the harvest that ripens after waiting. The work tells of a heart sown like seeds, phrase by phrase, that ripens like an ear of grain as the seasons pass.

처녀자리는 곡식의 여신 데메테르, 혹은 그녀의 딸 페르세포네라고 전해집니다. 페르세포네가 저승에 머무는 동안 데메테르가 슬퍼하자 땅은 겨울이 되었고, 딸이 돌아오면 다시 봄이 찾아왔다고 해요. 또 다른 이야기에서는 정의의 여신 아스트라이아가 마지막까지 사람들 곁에 남아 있다가 하늘로 올라 처녀자리가 되었고, 그녀가 들고 있던 저울이 바로 옆의 천칭자리가 되었다고 합니다.
8월 23일 무렵부터 9월 22일 무렵에 태어난 사람의 별자리로, 흙의 별자리이며 수성이 지배 행성입니다. 섬세함과 정성, 성실함, 그리고 작은 것 하나까지 소중히 살피는 따뜻한 마음을 상징한다고 해요. 곡식이 여무는 늦여름의 별자리답게, 묵묵히 가꾼 것이 결실을 맺는 시간을 품고 있습니다.
황도 12궁 가운데 가장 큰 별자리이며, 우리나라에서는 봄밤 남쪽 하늘에서 볼 수 있어요. 가장 밝은 별 '스피카'는 라틴어로 '이삭'이라는 뜻으로, 여신이 손에 든 밀 이삭 자리에서 푸른빛으로 빛납니다. 북두칠성의 손잡이를 따라 곡선을 그리면 목동자리의 아르크투루스를 지나 스피카에 닿는데, 이 길을 '봄의 대곡선'이라 부릅니다.
Virgo is said to be Demeter, goddess of grain, or her daughter Persephone. While Persephone stayed in the underworld, Demeter grieved and the earth turned to winter; when her daughter returned, spring came again. In another story, Astraea, the goddess of justice, stayed with people to the very last and then rose into the sky to become Virgo — and the scales she carried became neighbouring Libra.
It is the sign of those born from around 23 August to 22 September — an earth sign ruled by Mercury. It is said to stand for delicacy, care, diligence, and a warm heart that looks after even the smallest things. As the constellation of late summer, when grain ripens, it holds the time when what has been quietly tended bears fruit.
It is the largest constellation of the zodiac, seen in the southern sky on spring nights in Korea. Its brightest star, Spica, means 'ear of grain' in Latin, and shines blue where the goddess holds her ear of wheat. Follow the curve of the Big Dipper's handle past Arcturus in Boötes and you reach Spica — a path known as the 'Spring Arc'.

To the Virgo boy, I gave a little guitar. I had always wanted to make a child singing up at the stars.
Virgo is said to be the constellation that holds an ear of wheat. Just as seeds sown in spring ripen into grain through the long summer, I hoped every phrase the boy sang would someday ripen in someone's heart.
I seated the boy not inside the frame but on its sill, with one leg dangling outside, because I hoped he would be a child connecting the stories of the night sky with the world we live in. Even with clumsy chords and a few wrong notes, that song surely reached the stars.
When the light comes on, Virgo rises in the sky the boy is gazing at. I hope that a star somewhere in the sky answers the little song you sing tonight, too.
